Our Beginnings
Our story began more than fifty years ago in regional Greece, where our founder, Nick, was born and raised. From an early age, he developed a deep appreciation for the country’s traditional produce. Inspired by a passion for olives, olive oil, and Greek cheeses, Nick traded with local farmers and artisans, making sure his family always enjoyed the very finest his village had to offer.
Our Standards
At Lakonia Group, quality comes before everything else. We measure our success not only by our own achievements, but by the prosperity of our partners as well. By choosing to work with small, traditional producers rather than large corporations, we honour the generations before us and continue their message — delivering exceptional produce from the heart of the Mediterranean.
Lakonia - Λακωνία
The region of Laconia sits at the south-eastern tip of the Peloponnese Peninsula, where warm, rocky hillsides and close contact with the Aegean Sea create ideal conditions for cultivation. Once home to the ancient Spartans, olive growing in this area dates back to 1500 BC and has long been an essential part of Greek culture and the Mediterranean diet.
Nick Kapernaros
Founder & Managaing Director
Like many Europeans of his generation, Nick travelled to Australia in 1964 to begin a new life. After working across various industries, he found his true calling in food, opening a delicatessen in Sydney’s eastern suburbs in 1975.
As Mediterranean culture began to flourish in Australia, the deli thrived. Yet Nick remained unsatisfied. Disappointed by the quality of products available to customers, he set out to educate Australians about the exceptional produce Greece had to offer.
After working alongside established importers, Nick founded his own business in 1989. His vision of delivering superior Greek produce to Australia quickly gained momentum — along with his reputation. Known for his dedication to service and uncompromising quality, Nick became a respected figure within the wider Greek-Australian community.
